ZZ TOP: Taking a Piece of Jeff Beck on Tour

By Jim Cartwright Mar 4, 2024 | 2:32 PM

If you happen to catch ZZ Top on tour this year, please be sure and take note of the guitar Billy Gibbons plays on one particular song, which he told us about last month on the Rock Legends Cruise.

“As we were leaving to board the ship, we got a phone call from Jeff Beck’s wife and his tour manager. Jeff Beck’s favorite ZZ Top song was ‘Rough Boy.’ We had the opportunity to tour together. One of the first nights out Jeff came into the dressing room and he said, ‘Uh Billy, could I join you for a number? Could you play ‘Rough Boy’?’ And they’ve insisted that I take Jeff Beck’s guitar and play ‘Rough Boy’ on his guitar, which I’m so thrilled to be able to accept that invitation to do. It’ll be cool.”

ZZ’s Elevation Tour has them in Jacksonville, Florida Tuesday, and then they’ll hook up with Lynyrd Skynyrd on Friday in Savannah, Georgia for their Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour.

Gibbons and Beck shared a love of Hot Rods, and Gibbons was one of those Eric Clapton invited to perform at the two Beck tribute concerts he organized last year at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Beck died on January 10th, 2023 from bacterial meningitis. He was 78.
