The Who are headed back to the States.
They will surround their April 20th appearance at Jazz Fest in New Orleans with 14 more arena and amphitheater shows through late May before coming back again October and November.
Like their last tour in 2019, they will be joined by a local orchestra at each stop. Some of these shows are make-up dates for the ones they had to cancel that year when Roger Daltrey had vocal issues, and some are rescheduled from 2020 when they canceled due to the pandemic.
Dubbed The Who Hits Back!, the spring leg starts on April 22nd at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida and runs through May 28th at the Bethel Woods Center in Bethel, New York, which sits on the site of Woodstock where they performed in 1969. In between on May 15th is their first show in Cincinnati since 1979 when 11 fans were trampled to death at their show there.
The second leg gets underway on October 2nd in Toronto with 14 shows through November 5th in Las Vegas.
“Pete and I said we’d be back, but we didn’t think we’d have to wait for two years for the privilege,” says Daltrey. “This is making the chance to perform feel even more special this time around. So many livelihoods have been impacted due to COVID, so we are thrilled to get everyone back together – the band, the crew and the fans. We’re gearing up for a great show that hits back in the only way The Who know how. By giving it everything we’ve got.”
And Townshend stresses to Rolling Stone that this is not a farewell tour.
“Roger [Daltrey] is of the opinion that he wants to sing until he drops. That’s not my philosophy of life. There are other things that I want to do, still want to do, and will do, I hope. I hope I’ll live long enough to do them.
“But it’s not a farewell tour. Apart from anything else, we still have people who have tickets for the U.K. 2019 tour. We’re very, very keen to do that tour and we’ll be doing that tour in 2023, I think. But I’m I’m talking about stuff I don’t really know about. I don’t have any guarantees, like everybody else. I don’t really know for sure what’s going to happen next month.”
