MARKOWSKI EARNS BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK WITH WYOMING DOUBLE-DOUBLE:
Alexis Markowski earned the first Big Ten Player-of-the-Week award of her career after producing 22 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high-matching three blocks in the Nebraska women’s basketball team’s 66-39 win over Wyoming on Sunday.
Markowski, who scored the game’s first seven points to put Nebraska in the driver’s seat from start to finish against Wyoming, was the 2022 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and an eight-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week last season.
Markowski and the Huskers close non-conference play at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Wednesday by battling No. 20 Kansas. Tip-off between the Huskers and Jayhawks is set for 6 p.m.
NEBRASKA WOMEN’S HOOPS DOWNS WYOMING AT PBA:
Alexis Markowski produced her fourth double-double of the season and Maggie Mendelson made a strong impression in her Nebraska women’s basketball debut, as the Huskers pulled away from Wyoming in a 66-39 win at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Markowski finished with game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds while notching three blocks to power the Huskers.
Nebraska’s victory marked the 500th home win in the history of the program.
Nebraska returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 21, when the Huskers host unbeaten and No. 22 Kansas at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The contest will be broadcast across the Huskers Radio Network and KGFW.
ELECTRIC WORLD CUP FINALE ENDS IN MESSI CELEBRATION:
Lionel Messi kissed the World Cup trophy and celebrated with his teammates after an electrifying finish to the finale of the World Cup Tournament Sunday afternoon.
In probably the wildest final in the tournament’s 92-year history, Argentina won its third World Cup title by beating France 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw featuring two goals from the 35-year-old Messi and a hat trick by his heir apparent, France forward Kylian Mbappé.
Amid the chaos inside Lusail Stadium, Mbappé did all he could to emulate Brazil great Pelé as a champion at his first two World Cups. Even scoring the first hat trick in a final since Geoff Hurst for England in 1966.
GEORGIA TECH QUARTERBACK SET TO TRANSFER TO BIG RED:
Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims announced his commitment to the Huskers on Sunday.
Sims has played in 24 games, making 23 starts over his career. He’s completed 364-of-633 passes for 4,464 yards, 30 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. On the ground, he’s rushed for 1,152 yards and 11 touchdowns on 277 attempts.
Sims played his college ball for Geoff Collins at Georgia Tech, who succeeded NU head coach Matt Rhule when he left Temple for Baylor.
2022’s starter Casey Thompson has not officially made a decision on whether he will return with the Big Red.
LOPER BASKETBALL FINISHES SEMESTER WITH SPLIT SUNDAY AT HSC:
