Hastings College Men's Basketball // HC Bronco Athletics

ORANGIE CITY, IOWA – The Hastings College men’s basketball team had to settle for a season split with Northwestern as the Red Raiders defeating the Broncos 79-71 on Saturday afternoon inside the Bultman Center.

The Red Raiders would be able to build up a solid 41-33 lead at halftime as the Broncos were looking for some answers defensively on how to slow down the Northwestern attack. The Red Raiders shot nearly 60 percent from the floor in the first half and nearly 55 percent from behind the arc.

The Broncos came out hot to start the second half as Grady Corrigan knocked down a jumper followed by a Tyrique McMurrin three to make it 41-38. Following a steal by Corrigan, Reggie Thomas drained a jumper as HC was right back in the game at 41-40 with 17:48 to go as NWIA called a timeout.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, Northwestern quickly built the lead back to double digits at 52-41 in just over a 2:00 span. From this point forward Hastings managed to dwindle the lead down to seven just one time before taking the 79-71 loss.

Thomas led the way for Hastings with 25 points on 9-of-23 shooting while Corrigan finished with 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting. McMurrin also added 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Entering the game, Thomas was 11 points shy of 1,000 career points and with a layup in the first half, he eclipsed 1,000 points for his career.

HC finished the game shooting 45.3 percent (24-for-53) while the Red Raiders shot 55 percent (27-for-49). The rebounding edge favored Northwestern at 30-to-27 while both teams committed 11 turnovers each. A big factor was points in the paint that favored the Red Raiders 32-to-20.

Hastings is now 14-5 (9-2) on the year and will be back in action Sunday Jan. 28 hitting the road to take on Briar Cliff with tipoff set for 3:45 pm inside the Newman Flanagen Center in Sioux City, IA.
