LINCOLN – The Nebraska men’s basketball team was recognized for its efforts in the classroom Thursday afternoon, as the program received the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award.

The award is given to men’s basketball programs that completed the 2022-23 academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Huskers posted a team cumulative GPA of 3.15 during the 2022-23 academic year with 11 team members finishing the year with GPAs of 3.00 or better. The Huskers were one of five Big Ten programs honored Thursday.

In addition, four Huskers were named to the NABC Honors Court, which honors junior, senior and graduate student men’s basketball players who finished the 2022-23 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. The group, which is based on academic class status, featured Sam Griesel, Keisei Tominaga, Cale Jacobsen and Wilhelm Breidenbach. In addition, incoming transfer Rienk Mast earned the honor while at Bradley University last season.

The honor caps a strong year for the program off the court for the Huskers. NU tied a school record with six Academic All-Big Ten performers and posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in both semesters. In addition, Sam Hoiberg was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar for his work in the classroom, while NU played 12 members on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters.
