NSAA SELECTS FINALISTS FOR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR POSITION:

The Nebraska School Activities Association Board of Directors has selected four candidates to interview for the NSAA executive director position.

Current Executive Director Jay Bellar will be retiring from the NSAA at the end of June 2023. Bellar also served as a member of the NSAA Board of Directors for 11 years from 2007–2018

Finalists for the NSAA executive director position are Mark Armstrong, Athletics and Activities Director at Lincoln Southwest High School; Jon Cerny, Superintendent at Bancroft-Rosalie Public School; John Krogstrand, Director of Athletics for Omaha Public Schools; and Chris Loofe, Associate Superintendent for Kearney Public Schools.

Interviews will be held at the NSAA office in Lincoln on November 29 and November 30, 2022, with the new executive director beginning service on or about July 1, 2023.

NEBRASKA WOMEN DOWN TARLETON IN BACK-AND-FORTH MATCHUP:

Alexis Markowski and Isabelle Bourne both produced double-doubles, as Nebraska dominated the paint in a 71-53 women’s basketball win over Tarleton on Tuesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Markowski powered in 16 of her season-high 24 points in the second half while also pulling down 12 of her career-high 18 rebounds after halftime. The sophomore also tied career highs with three blocked shots and three steals, while adding two assists. It was Markowski’s second double-double of the season.

The Huskers open a four-game road swing by traveling to San Juan, Puerto Rico early Wednesday morning. NU will open the Puerto Rico Clasico by taking on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday at 12:30 p.m. (CT), before facing Mississippi State on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

LOPER MEN FALL IN EAGLES NEST AT CHADRON:

Junior guard Isaiah Watt scored 21 points and Chadron State hit five straight three pointers in the second half as part of a 91-72 win over Nebraska Kearney Tuesday night in Chadron.

CSC (1-3) earns its first win after three setbacks by a combined 12 points while the Lopers fall to 2-4. UNK is now off until a Dec. 1st (Thurs.) home game against Rogers State.

Utah super senior forward Darrian Nebeker tallied a game-high 24 points.

FORMER LOPER FOOTBALL STAR HOELCK SIGNS WITH USFL’s PANTHERS:

A former Loper has signed his first professional football contract with the upstart USFL’s Michigan Panthers.

Former UNK Offensive Lineman Corey Hoelck has signed his free agent tenders with the Panthers, making him the first Loper to sign a professional contract since Hinwa Allieu signed an undrafted free agent agreement with the Atlanta Falcons in 2020.

Hoelck was a key cog in the Lopers success on the gridiron from 2019-2021, where he was a starter on an offensive line that allowed TJ Davis to earn a Harlon Hill trophy runner-up finish in 2021 and UNK ended their season in the second round of the playoffs.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP:

The high school football season has officially wrapped up with the conclusion of the championship games in Lincoln Tuesday.

In the opening matchup Tuesday in C2, Norfolk Catholic handled Cedar Catholic, winning 23-0.

A surprising finish came in the C1 matchup as Aurora was punished by Pierce 42-14 after being tied at 14 at halftime.

Finally, in Class B Bennington wrapped their season as repeat champions with a 38-14 win over Omaha Gross Catholic.

A full list of this year’s championship results can be found below:

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS:

CLASS A – Omaha Westside

CLASS B – Bennington

CLASS C1 – Pierce

CLASS C2 – Norfolk Catholic

CLASS D1 – Clarkson/Leigh

CLASS D2 – Hitchcock County

CLASS D6 – Parkview Christian

HUSKER FOOTBALL PRACTICE COMMENTS – MICKEY JOSEPH:

JOSEPH – HUSKERS STILL HAVE ONE MISSION REMAINING:

Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph addressed the media after Tuesday’s practice and spoke on the team’s mentality heading into the final game of the season at Iowa…

Nebraska aims to knock off Iowa from atop the Big Ten West to prevent the Hawkeyes another trip to the Big Ten Title game.

JOSEPH – IOWA VERY SIMILAR TO PREVIOUS OPPONENTS:

Interim Head Coach for the Huskers Mickey Joseph spoke to the media after Tuesday’s practice and reiterated that Iowa matches up very close with previous Big Ten West opponents…

The Hawkeyes have one of the top defenses in the country but lack offensive explosion, rating 124th in the nation.

JOSEPH – HAWKEYES HAVE A GOOD SYSTEM:

Mickey Joseph had high praise for Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa football program leading into their matchup on Black Friday…

Nebraska looks to close out the season on a high note taking down Iowa as the Huskers sit at 3-8 on the season.

JOSEPH – NOT WORRIED ABOUT ROSTER CONTROL UNTIL AFTER IOWA:

Mickey Joseph – Nebraska interim Head Coach – was asked at his Tuesday practice session what roster conversations he’s been having with his team leading into the final week of the season…

Nebraska has yet to name a time, date, or person who could be taking over as head coach after the season concludes.

JOSEPH – GOOD AND BAD MEMORIES IN COMING BACK TO LINCOLN:

Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph was more reflective during his Tuesday post-practice press conference, talking about some of his favorite memories and some sour notes from his tenure so far in Lincoln…

Nebraska hired Joseph as the associate head coach and wide receivers coach in December 2021, and has signed him to a contract to keep him in Lincoln regardless of a coaching change – however a buyout could come if a new coach does not wish to keep the talented New Orleans recruiter and assistant.

KUBIK, KNUCKLES WILL NOT RETURN FOR FIFTH SEASON AT NEBRASKA:

A pair of Nebraska stars have already decided their futures in college volleyball: Neither Madi Kubik and Kenzie Knuckles will return for a fifth season.

Kubik and Knuckles, each of whom is a senior and eligible for another year, both announced on Tuesday that they will not be coming back for a fifth year.

Kubik recently said on Instagram that she was enjoying her final road trip to Iowa. Kubik confirmed that Saturday against Minnesota will be the only Senior Night she participates in during Tuesday’s press conference.

With both program cornerstones gone after this season, it’s going to give the incoming No. 1 recruiting class a chance to see the court right away. That also means the commitment of No. 5 recruit Laney ChoBoy is even bigger than originally thought. She’ll battle alongside Norris native and walk-on Maisie Boesiger for the starting defensive specialists role in 2023.

LSU, USC MOVE UP IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS:

LSU moved up to fifth and Southern California was sixth Tuesday night in the College Football Playoff rankings behind Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU.

The top four remained the same for the third straight week, but the chasing teams changed order after Tennessee lost to South Carolina last Saturday night.

Two games this weekend could create more clarity.

Michigan (11-0) is at Ohio State (11-0) on Saturday and USC hosts Notre Dame (8-3), which checked in at 15th in the selection committee’s rankings.
