KEARNEY BEARCAT FOOTBALL WINS GAME ONE OVER LINCOLN EAST:
In a game dominated by inexperience, big plays made by the Kearney defense and a stellar 69 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter by Ethan Kowalek gave the Bearcat football team their first win on the 2022 season, finishing off Lincoln East 14-6 at Seacrest Field on Thursday night.
A game riddled with three-and-outs and short drives, the contest was flipped by Zander Reuling receiving a short touchdown toss from Treyven Beckman in the second quarter. Leading 7-0 into halftime, East’s Dash Bauman found paydirt from 65 yards out but the ensuing PAT was blocked by Bearcat Justin Murray.
Leading 7-6, Kearney played keepaway despite a resilient effort by the Spartans to close the gap. Unable to get the ball into the hands of Malachi Coleman – the Spartans best offensive weapon – Kearney trudged away from Lincoln with the victory.
The Bearcats return home to face Fremont on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 PM from Ron and Carol Cope Stadium.

HUSKER VOLLEYBALL OPENS SEASON WITH AMERITAS PLAYERS CHALLENGE:
The top-ranked Nebraska volleyball team officially starts the 2022 season by hosting the Ameritas Players Challenge this weekend at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Nebraska will play three times this weekend. The Huskers open the season on Friday at 11 a.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, an NCAA Tournament qualifier in 2021. Nebraska faces Tulsa on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
The Huskers cap the weekend against Pepperdine, another 2021 NCAA Tournament team, at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

NEBRASKA RECEIVES COMMITMENT FROM CAMERON LENHARDT:
Just two days after naming a top three EDGE, Cameron Lenhardt has committed to Nebraska. The Huskers won out for the talented edge rusher over Michigan State and Penn State.
The Huskers have landed their 14th recruit in the 2023 class with Lenhardt. He is the second EDGE in the class, joining Husker legacy Maverick Noonan from Omaha (Neb.) Elkhorn South. They are expected to be the only two EDGE rushers in the class.
Lenhardt only took an official visit to Nebraska and was in the process of lining up additional official visits.

THUNDER’S TOP PICK TO MISS SEASON:
Oklahoma City forward Chet Holmgren, the No. 2 pick in this year’s NBA draft, will miss the 2022-23 season with a right foot injury.
The 7-footer was hurt while playing in a pro-am game last weekend in Seattle, near where he starred last season for Gonzaga, and the Thunder announced Thursday that he sustained a Lisfranc injury. Video appeared to show Holmgren was hurt on a play while defending a LeBron James drive to the basket on a fast break.
General manager Sam Presti said Holmgren will have surgery to repair the ruptured tendon on a date that hasn’t been determined and he expects Holmgren to be ready for the 2023-24 season.
